Fun and games for your cat: With the homemade cat fishing rod

Our delicate little cats are very quiet, but there is also a little predator inside each one. So that they can fully live out their instincts when playing, we need sturdy toys, among other things.

A sturdy fishing rod is quicker to build than you might think. You can find out what you need and how to build the cat fishing rod in this post by @abbasandzazou (Instagram).

In brackets you will find tips on dimensions, materials and procurement

  • Scissors
  • Cordless screwdriver and drill (diameter 3 mm)
  • A round rod in the desired length (50 cm, preferably beech because it is harder, splinters less and does not produce resin like spruce and fir)
  • A wood saw, if the round wood is not available in the desired length, sandpaper if necessary (to round off sharp edges)
  • Several leather straps, round (3 mm thick, approx. 1.10 m long) (90 cm for the fishing rod and 1 x 20 cm long piece for the lower tassel) (1-2 mm thick, 5 x 20 cm long also for the lower tassel) (can be obtained online or in a well-stocked craft store)

Step 1

Cut the wooden rod to the desired length and drill a 3 mm thick hole at the end of the rod. After drilling, round off all sharp edges with sandpaper. Then put the leather strap through the drill hole and tie the ends so that it does not slip out again.

Step 2

Make a loop with the other end of the leather strap, wrap the sewing thread around it about 1.5 cm above and tie a knot.

Step 3

Put the 6 x 20 cm leather pieces and the 6 x 20 cm long natural raffia together and put it as a bundle through the loop at the end of the leather strap.

To make a tassel out of the leather pieces and the natural raffia, fold them in the middle at the loop and wrap everything below it with the sewing thread .

Step 4

Tie the yarn and shorten the tassel to an even length.

And the fishing rod is ready – your cat will love it! Have fun playing!
